Adaptation Options for Motability Cars

The Motability Scheme is there to support your independence, and provide a variety of necessary adaptations free of charge or for a nominal extra fee. The options will depend on the size and type of model you choose. It is always best to work out which adaptations you need before selecting a car.

Three types of adjustments and adaptations are offered:

Motability Adaptation Options

Access

To make the most of any Motability vehicle, being able to get in and out easily is a priority. If your mobility is very low, a person hoist is ideal to help you settle into a passenger seat. Wheelchair users can select sturdy transfer plates, and swivel chairs are also offered.

Stowage

Make more space for a wheelchair, scooter or other large items with added storage. Cars which are large enough can have a roof box fitted. Where the boot has enough space, add an electric hoist that lifts equipment in and out for you.

Driving

You do not have to drive yourself, but if you can there are adaptations to increase your grip and control. The accelerator pedal can be moved to the left, and push/pull controls are an option if you have trouble pressing down on buttons.

Another potential addition is a remote control set-up for the headlights, indicators and windscreen wipers.
